READING PROGRAM

The Kumon Reading Program is ideal for children from the age of four, though high school. The Program consists of 22 levels Level – 7a through to Level L. The reading program is grouped together into blocks, with each block dealing with a certain aspect of reading instruction. There are five blocks; Word Building (7A to 2A), Sentence Building (AI to CII), Paragraph Building (DI to F), Summary (G to I), and Critique and Literacy Analysis (J to L). The reading program is ideal for the emerging reader. Students as young as four years old are able to get a head start on developing their reading skills in a supportive atmosphere with lots of individual attention. The ultimate goal of the English Reading Program is to develop reading comprehension to its fullest extent. The Program begins with letter sound recognition, phonics and vocabulary development. It then moves into a study of grammar and sentence structure. This is followed by exercises in organizing information, paragraph structure, passage analysis and ultimately summary writing and critical analysis. By establishing self-learning and early, rock solid foundations in core mathematics skills and English reading, Kumon helps children avoid frustration and failure later on. The levels are as follows:

  • 7A, 6A – Whole Word and Whole Language Learning, Rhyming, Simple Stories
  • 5A – Letter and Word Tracing, Phonics I – Letter Sounds, Basic Blends
  • 4A – Phonics II – Consonant Blends, Rhymes, Stories
  • 3A – Phonics III – Vowel Blends, Word Puzzles, Reading Sentences
  • 2A – Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives, Basic Reading Comprehension and Fluency
  • AI – Basic grammar and Vocabulary, Parts of Speech, Stories to 300 words
  • AII -Reading Comprehension and Fluency Development II
  • BI – Simple Sentences II, Verb Tense, Stories to 500 words
  • BII – Reading Comprehension and Fluency Development III
  • CI – Simple Sentences III, Compound and Complex Sentences, Stories to 1000   words
  • CII – Reading Comprehension and Fluency Development IV
  • DI – Paragraph Development I, Voice, Speech, Paragraph Development
  • DII – Reading Comprehension and Fluency Development V
  • EI – Paragraph Development II, Reason and Result, Explanation
  • EII – Reading Comprehension and Fluency Development VI
  • F – Paragraph Development III, Paraphrasing, Definition, Concision
  • G – Theme, Story Elements, Summary
  • H – Fact and Opinion, Passage Organization, Interpretation of Language
